November 2020

The FNAI lab is happy to welcome Dr. Maya Barzilay, our new lab manager and Dr.Kirti Sankhala, our new postdoctoral researcher. We are very excited to have them aboard!

Secondly, Assistant Prof. Tamar Segal-Peretz and Dr. Barun Barick have received the prestigious Hershel Rich Technion Innovation Award for their work on self-assembled nanostructures for optical coatings.  Congratulations to them both!


September 2020

This month, two of our M.Sc. students: Tamar and Ziv, have presented their final seminars. Tamar presented her research in “Gradient atomic layer deposition for controlled hydrophilization of ultrafiltration polymer membranes”:

Ziv presented his work in “Polymer dewetting in solvent-non-solvent environment new insights on dynamics and patterning”:

They both gave very interesting, well presented talks, leading to a good discussion by  attendants, that were interested in these research developments.

July 2020

An interesting paper has just been published done in collaboration with our friends in the material science and engineering department at the Technion.

The paper discusses the ability to rapidly screen the materials for donor-acceptor combinations prior to device fabrication and clarify how the processes affects the final device morphology and structure. You can read more about the paper here and can check out many of our other papers here.

A new paper has just been published in collaboration with our friends in the University of Chicago, demonstrating the ability to use 2D pre-patterns to direct the assembly of block copolymers into 3D superlative. May 2020

We are happy to share our latest publication about understanding and controlling interactions between polymer and organometallic precursor in sequential infiltration synthesis process. This work by Inbal and Neta dives deep into the SIS process and gives some interesting insights about the thermodynamics and kinetics. You can check the paper our in our publication section


March 2020

We are excited to announce that our group will be part of a new US-Israel consortium that will focus on developing new energy-efficient technologies for improving water purification and waste water cleaning. Additional details can be found at the Argonne National Laboratory site and on LinkdIn.

Moreover, we would like to congratulate Prof. Segal-Peretz and Dr. Barun Barick for winning the Hershel Rich Technion Innovation Award!

December 2019

We were delighted to host Prof. Menachem Elimelech from Yale University in our group, during his visit in Israel. Prof. Elimelech gave a very interesting talk in the Chemical Engineering – Civil and Environmental Engineering Colloquium about “Membrane Materials for Desalination and Wastewater Reuse”. It was a great pleasure to meet him and listen to his wonderful talk.

December 2019

On November 28th, the group attended the Chemical Engineering retreat. Tamar and Ziv presented posters accompanied by  “flash-talks” about their posters. They both gave excellent talks, and Tamar won the 3rd place award for her poster. The retreat was fun and informative about the diverse research performed in the faculty.


November 2019

At the end of last month, a 3D Electron Tomography Workshop was organized by both microscopy centers in the Technion, together with Thermo-Fischer scientific. In this two-day workshop, various methods of imaging and 3D visualization were presented.

Prof. Edwin L. Thomas gave an interesting talk about using Slice and View (FIB/SEM) tomography as a tool for visualization of soft matter periodic systems.

Later on, Prof. Segal-Peretz presented about using STEM and EDS tomography for organic and inorganic nano structures.

The whole team was very excited to take presence in the workshop, and had a wonderful experience!


October 2019

We’d like to start by welcoming Shachar Keren to our group. Shachar is starting his M.Sc. degree studies in the department of Chemical Engineering. You can find out more about Shachar and other members of our group in the “People” section of our site.

In other news, Prof. Segal-Peretz gave an invited talk about “Controlling diffusion and growth in SIS processes – new approaches for porous and multi metal oxide nanostructure fabrication”, at the 1st sequential infiltration synthesis workshop in Milan, Italy as part of the directed self-assembly symposium.

Finally, Rotem’s new paper about growing multiple metal-oxides in block copolymer templates by a simple proccess using SIS was published in Small magazine. You can find the paper here.


September 2019

This month, Ziv Golany and Prof. Segal-Peretz participated in the Israel Vacuum Society Annual Conference in Haifa. Ziv gave a talk on “Dewetting of polymer film in solvent- non-solvent environment, a new approach for polymer particle patterning”.

Also, two of papers by our group members were published.

First, we would like to congratulate Dr. Olga Kleinerman and the Gazit group for their paper on “Cooperatively Catalyzed Henry Reaction through Directed Metal‐Chitosan Interactions“. Secondly, Dr. Barun K. Barick published an interesting paper on “Tin oxide nanostructure fabrication via sequential infiltration synthesis in block copolymer thin films“.

Good job and congratulations to both of them!


June 2019

Earlier this month, Prof Segal-Peretz gave a talk on “Combining block copolymer self-assembly and metal oxide growth for functional nanostructures” and presented a poster on “Direct imaging of nanostructure evolution in bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels” in the 9th International Colloids Conference in Sitges, Spain.

In other news, Dr. Barun Barick received a postdoc fellowship from the Lady Davis Foundation. Congratulations to him!

Also, The Membrane Processes Lab, tutored by Prof. Segal-Peretz, toured the Hadera Desalination Plant under the guidance of Dr. David Hefer from IDE. The tour was very educational and fun!

Finally, Ziv and Tamar, both M.Sc. students in our group have received their B.Sc. diploma from the Chemical Engineering department at the Technion.


May 2019

On May 29th, the group participated in the 53rd annual meeting of the Israel Society of Microscopy (ISM 2019). Everyone presented a poster and Inbal gave a talk about her recent paper.

We are very proud that Tamar was awarded with the best poster honor.

April 2019

Several updates:

Earlier this month, Prof. Segal-Peretz gave a seminar on “Metal oxide growth within block copolymers – mechanism, challenges, and opportunities” in the Department of Materials and Interfaces, Weizmann Institute of Science, in the Soft Matter seminar series.

Moreover, Prof. Segal-Peretz gave a talk on “Understanding three-dimensional nanostructures in block copolymer systems” in the Inaugural Celebration- Breaking Resolution Barriers in Electron Microscopy”,  Weizmann Institute of Science.

Lastly, the Technion Center for Electron Microscopy of Soft Matter (TCEMSM) has undergone a major renovation and celebrated by holding a micrograph competition. The chosen micrographs now decorate the center’s hallways. Inbal, Ziv and Assaf participated in the competition and Assaf won an award for his submission.


March 2019

Two updates this month:

First, our new paper: Nano spray-dried block copolymer nanoparticles and their transformation into hybrid and inorganic nanoparticles, has been published in Advanced Functional Materials. The paper demonstrated how to combine nano-spray drying and clever solvent annealing processes to tune the morphology and porosity of block copolymer nanoparticles, including how to create particles with perpendicular cylinders. The particles are then exposed to sequential infiltration synthesis to selectively grow metal oxides in them resulting in structured and porous inorganic nanoparticles.

Group lunch and Awards

On February 26th, the group got together to celebrate advancements in research and development of the new solvent annealing chamber done by Ziv. The event was a huge success and everyone left happy and with a full stomach!

In other news, Rotem received the Sherman award for excellence for her achievements in research and studies and Assaf received the Gutwirth award. Congratulation to them both!


February 2019

Several updates this month.

Prof. Segal-Peretz was session chairperson in the dead-sea water 2019 workshop in the Nanomaterials at the water-energy nexus session.

Secondly, on February 11th-12th, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Volker Abetz and Clarissa Abetz from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Centre for Materials and Coastal Research in Germany. Prof. Abetz gave an interesting lecture about self-assembly of block copolymers in solutions and films.


January 2019

Community outreach:

Prof. Segal-Peretz did a science activity for elementary school children about the states of matter and the effect of temperature on materials behaviour. It was fun!


On January 15th, Inbal, Barun and Ziv went to the Israel Polymer and Plastic Society 2019 (IPPS 2019) conference. Ziv presented a poster in the poster session:

In the end, Inbal ended up winning the prize for best graduate student presentation! Congratulations to her and to all well done!


December 2018

A few updates:

First, the whole group went to the RBNI umbrella winter school in Kfra Blum. Barun, Olga, Inbal, Rotem, Ziv and Assaf all presented posters during the poster session. Assaf ended up winning the 3rd place in the competition.

 

Second, Professor Jonathan P. Singer, from Rutgers University, visited us and gave a seminar on Thermocapillary and Electrostatic Manipulation of Soft Matter for Micro/Nanomanufacturing.

Finally, Tamar gave an invited talk at the annual Multidimensional Metrology (MDM) consortium meeting  in Applied Materials, Israel.


November 2018

On November 29th, the Chemical Engineering department hosted a research exposure event at Binyamina winery. This time, Rotem and Assaf both gave a 3 minutes talk about their respective research.

In addition, both competed in the poster competition, where Assaf won 3rd place, and Rotem took the top spot!

Congratulations to them both and well done!


October 2018

This month, the lab and it’s members had a lot of different activities.

First, we were honored to have a Paul Nealey from the University of Chicago as our guest at the Technion. Prof. Nealey gave an RBNI colloquium on Directed Self-Assembly of Performance Materials.

Second, the team was at the Nano Israel conference in Jerusalem, Inbal, Rotem and Barun all presented a poster in the poster session.

Prof. Segal-Peretz gave an invited lecture at the International Microscopy Congress (IMC19) in Sydney, Australia on the subject of understanding 3D assembly of block copolymers via STEM tomography/


August 2018

We have two new exciting news to share:

A new paper from our group was pusblished in Journal of Colloids and Interface Science. This was a collaborative work between our group and the group of Prof. Trifkovic from the University of Calgary, Canada. The study shows how the structure and the properties of pickering emulsion with cellulose nanocrystal particles can be controlled. Check out “Role of interparticle interactions on microstructural and rheological properties of cellulose nanocrystal stabilized emulsions” in the Journal of Colloids and Interface Science.

In other news, Prof. Segal-Peretz gave a seminar in the Institute of Polymer Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany


Prof. Segal-Peretz participated in the Polymer Physics GRC in Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts where she presented a poster about the group’s research.


 

ISF Grant

Prof. Segal-Peretz wins the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) personal research grant and the ISF equipment grant for new faculty members. The project will explore how to control metal oxide growth within polymers- towards new hybrid materials and three-dimensional nanostructures. Congratulations!


July 2018

Last month, Tamar gave a talk at the EMRS – the European Materials Research Society, in Strasbourg, France.

Also, Olga presented her PhD research at the – Israel Society for Microscopy (ISM) meeting in Tel Aviv.

The group participated in the IlChE (Israel Chemical Engineering) 2018 conference – Tamar hosted the panel “Nano-Materials to Nanofabrication”. Neta gave a talk in this panel about understanding metal oxides growth within polymer films:

Welcoming Olga

Olga Kleinerman has recently begun her post-doctoral research in our group.

Her study is done in collaboration with Calgary University (Calgary, Canada) and involves direct imaging of Pickering emulsions.

We are excited to have her join our team, and wish her good luck in her research.

To learn more about Olga and the rest of the group
